I also discovered the negative affects this slow global economy has caused for these groups. The animal shelters/organizations who are hurting the most aren’t the large national groups.
.
It’s the small local or shelters and organizations that are really struggling right now.
.
.
Because of this, I have created a contest where people can tell their shelter story, and win valuable prizes. Not only that, but 2 lucky winners will each have 15% of the profits from the sale of NEW LIVES donated to the shelter or rescue of their choice.
.
.
Details of the contest are available at:
.

InspiringRescueStories.com

.
.
>I am asking for your help in spreading the word about the contest - and in the process, about the plight of shelter dogs, via word of mouth, your newsletter and/or blog.
.
.
.
.
Yours truly,
Joanne Wannan
.
.

L. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog.

.

.

We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have had it. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another.

.
.

They've never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They're scared, depressed and anxious.

.

.

Some are angry. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion.

.

.

So please, please don't come to rescue in the hopes of getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Details of the diet and the research behind it were published as a 13-page report in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society.
.
. .
The American Cancer Society reports show that dogs with cancer (lymphoblastic lymphoma in this case) have elevated levels of lactic acid and insulin in their blood. These abnormal elevations go along with wasting syndrome, decreased survival time, and decreased time to recurrence. By normalizing levels with arginine and fish oil, the researchers were able to reverse these trends, and significantly increase survival time. (Survival time for stage III was 700 days with the supplemented diet versus 400 for the regular diet; the time to recurrence for dogs with the supplemented diet was 425 days versus 275 days without supplements).
.
.
Arginine does not always stop the growth of cancer. It can do the opposite.
.
.
The reason that arginine can act differently, depending on the cancer, probably has to do with an enzyme known as arginase. If the cancer creates a lot of the enzyme, it appears that it will use arginine to promote growth by converting it to L-ornithine. If the cancer doesn't create much arginase, it probably converts arginine to nitric oxide instead. Nitric oxide is used by immune cells to fight cancer. Since cancer cells are not tested for arginase, it's impossible to tell what effect arginine will have on cell growth. For that reason, arginine's role at this time is limited to its potential use as an immune stimulant during traditional cancer treatment, along with fish oil.
.
.

Source : Life Extensoin Magazine

L. She accidentally found out about the plight of homeless horses in the United States. Once she knew that over 60,000 horses in this country are sent to horrible deaths each year, she knew she had to do something to help. She rescued horses privately from 1995 until 2000. But even with her efforts, she could not save very many horses. She applied for, and received non-profit status for Wildhorse Ranch Rescue (WHRR) and with the help of many people, WHRR has been able to help save many horses from death, abuse and neglect.
.

.

Wildhorse Ranch Rescue also takes in retired United States Government horses and mules from the Payson Forest Service, Alpine Forest Service and the United States Cavalry. WHRR provides an opportunity for these hardworking animals to live in peace and comfort in their golden years.

.

.

WHRR is a registered 501(c)3 organization with the Federal Government and in the States of Arizona. All donations are tax deductible as allowed by the IRS. All donations go to help horses in need. ..and sometimes kitties too. We have Kitty City(tm) at Wildhorse Ranch Rescue. Kitty City is a colony of spayed/neutered feral cats that we have taken in for cat rescues in the Phoenix area. We provide a safe home for them, provide all of their vet care and food and they live safely on our ranch. .

Wildhorse Ranch Rescue
.

Beginning November 12, 2009 we have NEW Public Hours for the Gift Shop and Ranch OPEN - Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 5 pm and during Events

CLOSED Monday - Wednesday

.

Physical address: 11811 S Lindsay Road
Gilbert, AZ 85296
East side of Lindsay between Elliot and Warner Roads
Phone: 480-503-5497 or 866-926-8007

.

.

L. Then why is it that the shelters that are expected to provide these animals with a second chance at life are instead being forced to euthanize them? Shelters are the last line for millions of innocent dogs. The public has no idea of the magnitude of this national tragedy. The sad reality is that over four million dogs are killed each year in shelters. Why, in a country of dog lovers, are so many dogs homeless? Because their families abandon them, for reasons like job change, divorce and new baby… and most shelters don’t have the necessary programs to get the dogs the exposure they need to find new homes. Shelters find homes for many dogs, but millions are euthanized. For far too long we have been told there is no other way.

AND A REASON FOR HOPE

DogsInDanger.com believes in the power of compassion, and that Americans would do more to help and adopt shelter dogs, if only they knew how many dogs shelters were forced to euthanize. We also believe that shelters don’t really want to euthanize dogs, if they had any other option. Simply put, we have chosen a path of technology as a means of connecting these scared, abandoned shelter dogs with the loving homes they deserve. As a nonprofit organization, we seek no other gain except for the happiness we see in the face of a dog as he faithfully walks out through the shelter doors, in perfect step with his loving new family.

It may be uncomfortable for some to see lists of names and photos of dogs scheduled to be euthanized, but, the truth is uncomfortable. By making it personal, we believe more people will be compelled to help these dogs. Thus dogsindanger.com refuses to present a sanitized version of the truth. Our ultimate goal is to see a day where healthy and treatable animals are no longer killed by their most trusted friends.

Visit our site to find out how you can help!

.

DogsInDanger.com

.

.

L. They hurriedly packed what they'd decided to take with them, and drove to the dump with the rest. There they dropped off an old tired couch, and a brown pit bull mix. For several days the dog waited for her family to return. Tied to the couch she had no choice. When she was finally discovered, she was dehydrated and very tired.

Debbie Eaglebarger, caretaker of the local Corning, California shelter and the one who untied her, gave her something to eat and drink, and named her Summer.

There will always be people like Summer's former owners, who get rid of their dogs thoughtlessly. But Eaglebarger says the number of dogs who've been hastily abandoned due to an eviction or loss of a home is on the rise. "The foreclosure crisis is hitting very hard here," she says.

Summer arrives, Summer turned out to be among the lucky ones. Eaglebarger was able to find the once fearful dog a new home. The pit mix, who has blossomed into a wag-friendly dog, now lives permanently with her new family, a couple, in San Francisco.

Eaglebarger tries to help people on the verge of losing their homes find new ones, and there are options. But she also recommends bring your dog to a shelter if all else fails. "It's much better than leaving your dog on the side of the road to starve, get into a fight, or be hit by a car," she says, "or be thrown in a dump."

Second-Chance-Pets

Second Chance Pet Rescue

Corning Animal Shelter

4312 Rawson Rd.

Corning, CA 96021

Phone: 530-824-7054
.
.

L. Hundreds of pets, endangered species and other non-target animals are injured or killed in traps.

Footloose Montana provides information about the threat of trapping to public safety on public lands, and its impact on our natural resources.

Footloose Montana

Footloose Montana
P.O. As you can imagine, the costs for running an operation of this magnitude are overwhelming. Our monthly operating expenses have now increased to $15,000.00 and our vet bills stay at an average of $5,000.00.
.
.
Here nestled in the hills of the high desert, those who have suffered in silence will never hear another gun shot or the siren of a pursuing police car. Every night they will fall asleep to the yipping of coyotes and the soothing hoot of the owl. They are safe and content. The only thing missing is a home of their own. Please help us to help them.
.
.

Visit LA Pit, the online store with attitude!

.

.

Dogs for Adoption
Interested in a dog?
Fill out our Adoption Questionnaire!

.
Wondering what happened to a dog? At the center, Mustangs rescued from abuse or neglect are rehabilitated and adopted out to qualifying homes. We have recently acquired 501(c) nonprofit status and will be expanding our facilities and training center.

.

We also assist the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) as a safe holding center for reassignment cases.

.

Since it's inception six years ago, over sixty Mustangs have been rescued, gentled or owner-mentored. We educate the public to the plight of these magnificent creatures by providing workshops, clinics and lectures. Groups, such as the 4H, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts come to learn about the history of Mustangs and observe a horse gentling demonstration. We promote the breed at Bureau of Land Management adoptions, schools, county fairs and wild life festivals.

.

We also mentor Mustang owners in the care and gentling of their newly adopted wild horses. WHR is available for special events and clinics. Please contact us for more information.

.

Wyomie was the first Mustang to be rescued by WHR. We take in dogs from Animal Control Agencies and Humane Societies located within the state of Oregon as well as Washington. We also work with many smaller Rescue Groups across the country, as well as a small number of owner surrendered dogs. We specialize in helping dogs that have no other options. This includes dogs that other shelters do not have space for, long term residents who have run out of time and dogs that other shelters may consider ‘unadoptable’.
.

Since Family Dogs New Life Shelter began in 2004 we have placed over 6000 dogs into permanent homes and could very possibly have the pet you have been longing for, so come on in and meet some of our furry kids! With your help we hope to continue reducing the number of dogs being euthanized each year by taking in needy dogs, providing them a fun and healthy environment until we are able to find them the perfect forever home. We have high hopes of expanding in the future, one day moving to a new larger facility that better fits our dogs needs and eventually starting a sanctuary in the country to provide refuge for ‘un adoptable’ dogs who have no place else to go….Family Dogs believes in community, and we hope that with your support we can reach these goals. Together we can make a difference.

Show Your Support

@

The Family Dogs Marketplace

We’ve got lots of cool stuff for sale, your purchase of these items helps give our dogs a safe, happy place to live while they’re waiting for their forever home.
.

2010 Family Dogs New Life Calendar.
.
12 months of beautiful photographs. 12 months of beautiful dogs.
.
.
.
As always, all proceeds from the sale of this calendar go directly to our shelter. Below is one example of a way you can help by filling currently open volunteer positions:

Dog Fosters We need dog fosters, so more shelter dogs can make it safely to new adoptive homes.
.
Cat and Kitten Fosters: Spring and Summer are a busy time for the shelter. Kitten season is upon us and we need people to help care for and socialize the kittens to get them ready for adoption.
.
Cat Photographers: Love animals? Love photography? Why not combine the two? FOFAS is looking for someone to take pictures and write bios of incoming cats for our website. Flexible schedule, requiring approximately 2-4 hours a week.

Dog Photographer: If you enjoy the antics of doggies hamming it up for the camera, here's a great way to spend a few hours every other Sunday. Dog photographers work with another (experienced!) volunteer to photograph incoming dogs for publicity/web site posting, then crop and/or edit the photos at home and email them to other volunteers for posting.
.
.
Dog Walkers: Get some exercise and make a dog's day. We need more dog walkers to help us get our canine friends out of their cages.
.
.

Donations: Perhaps you don't have time to volunteer right now.

Monetary donations of any amount are always gratefully accepted, or consider donating some wet kitten food to help us feed the many kittens coming through the shelter this summer. FOFAS gratefully accepts donations of UNOPENED cans or bags of food (our shelter veterinarian requests that we not accept opened bags of food). You may drop the food off at the shelter or consider a Petsmart gift card.

.

.
If you are interested in these or other volunteer positions,
please see our Volunteering Page.
.
All volunteers must attend a Volunteer Orientation.

.
.

We currently have

6 dogs

.
36 cats
.
and 2 other animals waiting to be adopted.

.

.

.

Volunteer Office:

2700 Fairmont Drive

San Leandro, California

94578-0247

(Located next to the Animal Shelter.
