Dancing Her Way Out Of Misery

The scene we found last week at a Tennessee puppy mill was tragically typical: 225 dogs confined in filthy cages, utterly lacking human care and compassion.

Within hours, we'd transported them to an emergency shelter set up by The HSUS and our partners. After much TLC, the dogs are clean, fed, and obviously relieved.

Relief alone doesn't quite capture the feelings of one pup who broke out in joyful dance. We're pretty certain she was brimming with pleasure over the loving attention and a second chance at life. Watch our heartwarming video.

Note to adopters: Lassie, Cleo, Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in rescue. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog.

We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have had it. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another.

They've never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They've lived outside, in a crate, or in the basement. They're scared, depressed and anxious.

Some are angry. Some are sick. Some have given up.

But we are Rescue and we don't give up. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion.

So please, please don't come to rescue in the hopes of getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Come to Rescue to give, to love, to save a life -- and to mend your own spirit. Arginine and Fish Oil May Help Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy
When the people at Hills Pet Nutrition went looking for a diet that would help dogs with cancer, they didn't know it would take ten years to come up with the formula.

In the end, they found that two things make a significant difference in remission and survival time: arginine and fish oil. Details of the diet and the research behind it were published as a 13-page report in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society reports show that dogs with cancer (lymphoblastic lymphoma in this case) have elevated levels of lactic acid and insulin in their blood. These abnormal elevations go along with wasting syndrome, decreased survival time, and decreased time to recurrence. By normalizing levels with arginine and fish oil, the researchers were able to reverse these trends, and significantly increase survival time. (Survival time for stage III was 700 days with the supplemented diet versus 400 for the regular diet; the time to recurrence for dogs with the supplemented diet was 425 days versus 275 days without supplements).

Arginine does not always stop the growth of cancer. It can do the opposite.
.

The reason that arginine can act differently, depending on the cancer, probably has to do with an enzyme known as arginase. If the cancer creates a lot of the enzyme, it appears that it will use arginine to promote growth by converting it to L-ornithine. If the cancer doesn't create much arginase, it probably converts arginine to nitric oxide instead. Nitric oxide is used by immune cells to fight cancer. Since cancer cells are not tested for arginase, it's impossible to tell what effect arginine will have on cell growth. For that reason, arginine's role at this time is limited to its potential use as an immune stimulant during traditional cancer treatment, along with fish oil.

Wildhorse Ranch Rescue was started in 1995 by Kim Meagher (pronounced Ma-her), an employee of Intel Corporation. She accidentally found out about the plight of homeless horses in the United States. Once she knew that over 60,000 horses in this country are sent to horrible deaths each year, she knew she had to do something to help. She rescued horses privately from 1995 until 2000. But even with her efforts, she could not save very many horses. She applied for, and received non-profit status for Wildhorse Ranch Rescue (WHRR) and with the help of many people, WHRR has been able to help save many horses from death, abuse and neglect.

Wildhorse Ranch Rescue also takes in retired United States Government horses and mules from the Payson Forest Service, Alpine Forest Service and the United States Cavalry. WHRR provides an opportunity for these hardworking animals to live in peace and comfort in their golden years.

Hey -I wanted to send you a final update on Iams Home 4 the Holidays (IH4TH). IH4TH had its most successful adoption drive ever by placing nearly 1.4 million pets into loving homes in the last three months!

Between Oct. 1, 2009 and Jan. 4, 2010, more than 3,500 animal organizations and the IH4TH ambassador—two-time Academy Award®-winning actress Hilary Swank—proved to be a powerful combination in the massive effort to help reduce pet homelessness.

“I’m proud to be part of such an amazing cause and I hope the many families who adopted through the IH4TH program will experience the same unconditional love and fulfillment my dogs Karoo and Rumi give me every day,” said Swank. “I hope our success inspires everyone to get involved and continue to help eradicate pet homelessness because there are millions of animals who still need our help and we all have the ability to help make a difference.”

The following animals were adopted this year:

As one of the most successful pet adoption programs in the world, IH4TH partners thousands of animal organizations dedicated to helping place homeless animals with happy, loving homes. Abandoned Foreclosure Pets: The Unsuspecting Victims

The surge of housing foreclosures is taking a heavy toll on families across the country, and our pets are paying the biggest price of all.

Last summer one family in northern California lost their home. They hurriedly packed what they'd decided to take with them, and drove to the dump with the rest. There they dropped off an old tired couch, and a brown pit bull mix. For several days the dog waited for her family to return. Tied to the couch she had no choice.When she was finally discovered, she was dehydrated and very tired.

Debbie Eaglebarger, caretaker of the local Corning, California shelter and the one who untied her, gave her something to eat and drink, and named her Summer.

There will always be people like Summer's former owners, who get rid of their dogs thoughtlessly. But Eaglebarger says the number of dogs who've been hastily abandoned due to an eviction or loss of a home is on the rise. "The foreclosure crisis is hitting very hard here," she says.

Summer arrives, Summer turned out to be among the lucky ones. Eaglebarger was able to find the once fearful dog a new home. The pit mix, who has blossomed into a wag-friendly dog, now lives permanently with her new family, a couple, in San Francisco.

Eaglebarger tries to help people on the verge of losing their homes find new ones, and there are options. But she also recommends bring your dog to a shelter if all else fails. "It's much better than leaving your dog on the side of the road to starve, get into a fight, or be hit by a car," she says, "or be thrown in a dump."

Wild Horse Rescue

We are dedicated to the preservation of the spirit of the west by saving America's wild heritage, the Mustang. At the center, Mustangs rescued from abuse or neglect are rehabilitated and adopted out to qualifying homes. We have recently acquired 501(c) nonprofit status and will be expanding our facilities and training center.

We also assist the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) as a safe holding center for reassignment cases.

Since it's inception six years ago, over sixty Mustangs have been rescued, gentled or owner-mentored. We educate the public to the plight of these magnificent creatures by providing workshops, clinics and lectures. Groups, such as the 4H, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts come to learn about the history of Mustangs and observe a horse gentling demonstration. We promote the breed at Bureau of Land Management adoptions, schools, county fairs and wild life festivals.

We also mentor Mustang owners in the care and gentling of their newly adopted wild horses. WHR is available for special events and clinics. Please contact us for more information.

Wyomie was the first Mustang to be rescued by WHR. Wyomie is a very special wild horse that was returned back to the wild. She is located at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Since Family Dogs New Life Shelter began in 2004 we have placed over 6000 dogs into permanent homes and could very possibly have the pet you have been longing for, so come on in and meet some of our furry kids! With your help we hope to continue reducing the number of dogs being euthanized each year by taking in needy dogs, providing them a fun and healthy environment until we are able to find them the perfect forever home. We have high hopes of expanding in the future, one day moving to a new larger facility that better fits our dogs needs and eventually starting a sanctuary in the country to provide refuge for ‘un adoptable’ dogs who have no place else to go….Family Dogs believes in community, and we hope that with your support we can reach these goals. A no-kill shelter located east of Reedley, CA at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Although our primary focus is to rescue and re-home dogs, we have been known to also care for more than a few cats too!

We are an all-volunteer organization open by appointment only.

A non-profit animal rescue organization composed exclusively of volunteers, with an office on the grounds of the Alameda County Fairmont Animal Shelter in San Leandro, Ca (located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area)

Volunteer & Donation Opportunities at FOFAS

If you love animals, FOFAS has the volunteer opportunity that's just right for you! Below is one example of a way you can help by filling currently open volunteer positions:

Dog Fosters We need dog fosters, so more shelter dogs can make it safely to new adoptive homes.

Cat and Kitten Fosters: Spring and Summer are a busy time for the shelter. Kitten season is upon us and we need people to help care for and socialize the kittens to get them ready for adoption.
.
Cat Photographers: Love animals? Love photography? Why not combine the two? FOFAS is looking for someone to take pictures and write bios of incoming cats for our website. Flexible schedule, requiring approximately 2-4 hours a week.

Dog Photographer: If you enjoy the antics of doggies hamming it up for the camera, here's a great way to spend a few hours every other Sunday. Dog photographers work with another (experienced!) volunteer to photograph incoming dogs for publicity/web site posting, then crop and/or edit the photos at home and email them to other volunteers for posting.

Dog Walkers: Get some exercise and make a dog's day. We need more dog walkers to help us get our canine friends out of their cages.

Donations: Perhaps you don't have time to volunteer right now.

Monetary donations of any amount are always gratefully accepted, or consider donating some wet kitten food to help us feed the many kittens coming through the shelter this summer. FOFAS gratefully accepts donations of UNOPENED cans or bags of food (our shelter veterinarian requests that we not accept opened bags of food). You may drop the food off at the shelter or consider a Petsmart gift card.

The Shelter Pet Project

The Shelter Pet Project (SPP), a PSA campaign aimed at increasing the rate of shelter pet adoption in the US by dispelling myths about these lovable animals - which keep many from finding homes.

We're looking to give shelter pets an image makeover, letting the 17 million people who plan on getting a companion animal this year know that shelters should be the first and best place to find them.
